A Manic Mom Thought: The Family We Build
The Family We Build ![]()
I often see the posts throughout my news feed about family earning their place in our children’s lives.
Posts about not teaching our children that they have to love someone simply because they’re family.
Posts about choosing the people who show up, make the effort, and love our children well.
And I think about those posts often.
I’m always tempted to comment my two cents. So here it is…
My children don’t have the extended-family connections I’d hope they’d have. Some by their choice, some by ours, some because of death and some simply because of distance.
Whatever the circumstance, I’ve had to learn that family isn’t always defined by a title or by blood.
Sometimes it isn’t even defined just by the people who show up.
It’s also the people who make the calls, send the texts, or simply remember to reach out.
Distance doesn’t have to be the divide in a family line.
But more importantly, I want to teach them that they have the power to change that story.
Someday, they will have families of their own.
They will have children.
Nieces and nephews.
And eventually, our grandchildren.
And I want them to build something different.
I want them to build the kind of family where their children know what it feels like to have people who show up.
Who make the effort.
Who remember.
Who love without keeping score.
Who choose each other, even when it’s not convenient.
Maybe we can’t change the family we were born into, or who shows up for us now.
But we can absolutely help build the family that comes after us.
And that starts with me, as their mom. ![]()
